Font Guide...Script Fonts...a comparison
First off, go ahead and laugh at my sentence. I could not remember the exact sentence that is used to represent all the letters in the alphabet so I made up my own sentence. It's similar to the classic sentence. But, please don't post the classic sentence if you know it. This will cause me much stress and I'll have to kick myself for not remembering what it was in the first place. :)

I realized I had way too many fonts in my font folder. Over 600 fonts. So I started going through it and taking out the fonts I don't use and putting them in a font-holding-folder. (Never just delete them.) You might want to use them again at some point. Plus you put a lot of time and effort into finding them. I quickly saw that I had a lot of fonts that were very similar and some were exactly alike. So I decided to type them out in a sentence and label them so I could figure out which ones to keep and which ones to put in the holding folder.

This is my font guide. I make icons, so this guide is mostly, not totally, based on which fonts will work best in icons. I have used the smallest font size possible in which each font can still be read, and also looks the most clear and smooth. This was done in Photoshop:CS2 and I used the "sharp" font setting. I'm not saying all these fonts will work, but looking at the guide you will quickly see which fonts are still legible and look smooth even when they are tiny.

You will not find every single font out there in this guide. These are just the fonts that are/were in my font folder.

This is a visual guide. You can look at similar fonts all on one page, see the name of the font and the size I used to type it on the guide. Print out the sheets or copy them to your computer. You may or may not agree with how I have categorized the fonts. I agree that some fonts from the "DecoLoopy" page could be at home in the "Fancy" page and vice versa etc. But it would have been too much to put everything on one sheet, so I separated them as best I could and gave them some descriptive names.

Please do not hotlink these guide sheets. Copy them to your computer or save this entry in your favorites.

So far I have just done the Script Fonts that were on my computer. I will get to the other fonts eventually.

Script Fonts
Upright Fonts are fonts like: Alison, Memento, Fiolex Girls, Ohio Script.
DecoLoopy Fonts are fonts like: CAC Pinafore, BlackJack, Saginaw, Carpenter.
Fancy Fonts are fonts like: Old Script, Romance, Velvet.
Flingy Fonts are fonts the have loops and swashes coming off the letters, like: Scriptina, Bickham Script, Albemarle Swash.
Scribbly Fonts are fonts like: Mystical, CK Maternal, Hannibal Lecter, SameSexMarriage.

Do you think it's helpful? I thought it would be, but now I'm not so sure. Judging by the lack of response.

I never can tell about these things. Something I think is just OK turns out very popular and something I think is good turns out not to get much of a response. Hmmmmm.

Well I wouldn't worry about a lack of comments. People are funny about that here for some reason. Some things they'll go mad commenting on and other things... Silence.

I admire your work very much, so even if I don't say so, please know that I really appreciate what you do.

Thanks so much. I do think people look without commenting. So I'll try not to take it as lack of interest. :)

I just organized my 2,152 fonts (and counting), and after going through my 23 categories, I laughed when I saw "flingy" fonts. I sadly, do not have a "flingy" category. :(

This looks quite helpful at this point, but I'm not going through it very deeply right now, as I've been staring at categorized fonts for days. :) So I'm adding it to memories.

Thank you!

Wow, that is some font collection. It took me about a day and a half just to categorize these script fonts. I can't imagine trying to do over 2,000.

I'm pretty sure I have more than 600 fonts. Because not all of them are in my fonts folder. I am seriously considering putting them in folders in separate categories in my holding folders. Just so I can keep them all organized.

When I made the "flingy" category I thought people are going to think I'm nuts. lol. :)

Clearly you are nuts! Because, I really recommend you try the AMP Font Viewer.

I was using another program before, but it was only a previewer. AMP lets you create categories, sort your fonts to those categories, and then view one category at a time. Also, fonts can be in multiple categories. Really, do give it a try.

1. The picture resizing thing is a browser thing, not Photobucket. [/technical]

2. How did you get "Little Days" to look good at size 18? For me, it usually cuts parts of the letters out if it's smaller than size 30.

Ah, thank you. I wasn't sure about that. I will have to correct that in my post.

I use Photoshop CS2. And I have anti-alias set to sharp.

What program do you use? Try messing with your anti-alias. I know when I used to use Photoshop Elements I had to turn anti-alias on in order for my regular fonts to look right and off for pixel fonts. Or maybe it was the other way around. I can never remember. I actually liked using Elements when I used a font. One drawback is that you can't see what they look like the way you can in CS2.

Thanks for this ;-) I've been wondering what several of these fonts were whenever I saw them around! Do you know where I can get a copy of the Dagobert font from your Deco-Loopy Fonts page? I searched the web high and low and can't find it anywhere :(

This is VERY useful - thank you very much for doing it!!! If this is fine to ask - where from do you usually take your fonts?? Is there any possibility for you to upload a batch? ( I know this is so far-fetched and I absolutely understand if you can't!!!!)

I am on a look for new fonts as I want to make some textual icons..

The first free font site that comes to mind is www.dafont.com

There are a bunch of other as well.

http://kevinandamanda.com/scrapbook/fonts/fontsforpeas/

http://simplythebest.net/fonts/script_fonts.html

http://www.fonts101.com/xt_search_az_vt!Search~font.html

I had a lot more font web sites bookmarked on my other computer. I need to hook that computer up and get the links off of it.

Also are you a member of [info]fontaddicts? That's a really good community. :)

Thank you so much , dear - you are so wonderful! I have joined the comm and the web-sites are great. I am very dis-organized with fonts - I usually go through a patch of making textual icons for which I find a particular font that matches the mood and after that I just use my favourites. :D
